The importance of allergen information

  • Posted

There have been 35 product recalls so far this year relating to either failure to include an allergen on the ingredients list or as a result of incorrect packaging.

This would suggest that there is still an issue in providing the correct allergen information before a product is shipped out, putting allergy sufferers at risk.

It is important that food business operators are aware of, and diligent in checking their products against, the regulations concerning allergen information labelling.

Remember: All mandatory written allergen information must be correct, clearly legible and not obscured in any way.

Consider: How might you improve your labelling? Is your packaging clear and easy to read, even for those with sight problems such as colour blindness?

Be Aware: Failure to correctly label allergen information puts your consumers, and your business, at risk. For your business, failing to comply with these regulations may result in prosecution. For your consumers, however, an incorrect allergen label could result in serious injury or even death.
