Rapid £50,000 initial payment obtained for Suffolk mesothelioma sufferer

Martyn Hayward, an asbestos-related disease claim specialist at Ashtons Legal, has obtained an interim payment of £50,000 for Mr T, who was diagnosed with mesothelioma in autumn 2019.

The final details of his full claim are now being agreed.

Mr T worked in the 1960s as a shipwright for a business based in Oulton Broad, Lowestoft. He worked alongside ‘laggers’ who mixed up powdered asbestos with water and applied the wet mix to the newly installed pipework during the ships’ construction. Mixing asbestos in this way generated substantial volumes of visible airborne asbestos dust in his immediate vicinity. He described it as “like working in a snowstorm”. No warnings about the dangers of inhaling asbestos dust were ever communicated to Mr T and no breathing masks were provided.

Martyn comments: “Fortunately the insurers of Mr T’s previous employer agreed rapidly that they would not contest the claim and so he has already received an initial payment which will help him to make the most of the time he has left with his family. Sadly, given the nature of mesothelioma, it is always important to progress claims as quickly as possible following diagnosis.”
