Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2023

  • Posted

October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sadly, we all know someone who has been touched by breast cancer in one form or another.

Many charities and organisations across the UK aim to raise awareness and understanding about breast cancer, the various types, the symptoms and treatments available.

There are different types of breast cancer, some of which can also affect men. Breast cancer can be either non-invasive or invasive. Non-invasive breast cancer stays within the ducts or lobules. Invasive breast cancer is when the cancer cells spread outside the milk ducts or lobules where they first started.

Symptoms of breast cancer can vary between individuals. Whilst the most common symptom is a lump in the breast, it is important to be ‘breast aware’ and seek advice when there is something unusual for you. Other symptoms can include dimpling of skin, inverted nipple, a rash, bleeding or discharge from the nipple.

Treatment of breast cancer will vary from person to person depending on the type of cancer and the stage and grade of the cancer. Initial treatment is often surgical removal of the cancer and possible follow-on treatment, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy or hormonal therapy.

Treatments for breast cancer are improving, meaning many more people are achieving cure and living longer. However, it is still important that diagnosis is made early and the right treatment is started as soon as possible.
