Substantial six-figure settlement obtained for life-changing injury

Graham Heywood, who specialises in serious and catastrophic injury claims at Ashtons Legal, has obtained a settlement of over £2 million for Ms K from Cambridge.

Ms K suffered a spinal injury in a workplace accident and also suffered multiple fractured ribs and a punctured lung, as well as other cuts and bruises. The damage caused to her spine has left her with restricted mobility and loss of feeling in her lower limbs, resulting in the need for a wheelchair and some ongoing care and treatment. The claim was successfully settled within 18 months of the incident, which is unusual for a claim of this size.

Graham comments: “We visited Ms K in hospital at the start of her claim and urged the defendant to become involved in her treatment from the outset. Her employer’s insurers admitted liability for the accident and her injuries very early on and agreed to provide funds for rehabilitation under the Rehabilitation Code. Temporary modifications were quickly made to Ms K’s house to give her access to ground-floor bathroom facilities, and she was provided with a case manager and a treatment and rehab team to support her.

“We are pleased to have been able to negotiate a substantial settlement which means that Ms K can now buy a much more suitable, adapted property and will have funds to cover her future medical and care needs.

“Fortunately, there are some employers and their insurers who are quick to take responsibility for injuries to their employees following incidents at work, and this makes it much easier for compensation to be obtained promptly and for the injured party to begin to get their life back on track, all be it that life will never be the same.”
