Cauda equina syndrome claims

  • Posted

Cauda equina syndrome is a rare, but extremely serious medical condition which requires urgent treatment in order to potentially avoid significant injury or disability.

Cauda equina syndrome occurs when nerves in the lower back become compressed, often causing severe pain and that can also spread into the upper legs. As the condition progresses, the patient may also experience a feeling of numbness in the saddle area, weakness in the legs, and incontinence. If the condition is not diagnosed at an early stage, then it is possible that these symptoms can become permanent.

Although cauda equina syndrome is a very rare condition, your doctor should be aware of the warning signs and ‘red flag’ symptoms which warrant urgent referral to a specialist for treatment. These symptoms include, but are not limited to:

  • bilateral sciatica
  • numbness in the saddle area
  • urinary incontinence
  • faecal incontinence.

If there is a failure to act upon these symptoms in a timely manner, the consequences can be devastating. At Ashtons Legal we understand the impact that a misdiagnosis can have and can support you through the process of making a claim for compensation. In addition to our legal expertise, a rehabilitation co-ordinator will be able to help guide you through every stage of your recovery.

If you, or someone close to you, suffers from cauda equina syndrome and has concerns about the treatment that they have received, then please contact our team of medical negligence specialists for advice.
