Govt urged to take flexible approach to employment law

The government needs to take a more flexible approach to employment law, it has been suggested.

In collaboration with Hays, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has released a new report called Thinking Positive: the 21st century employment relationship.

According to the CBI, the authorities should look at the many successful workplace relationships formed during the economic downturn and stay clear of automatically introducing legislation.

As an alternative, it recommended bringing in codes of practice or guidance that allow for more flexibility.

“With a strong base of employment rights already in place, we simply don’t need the state telling us how to manage every aspect of basic human relations,” CBI director-general John Cridland said.

However, the body did acknowledge that the government has been looking at ways of improving the tribunals system in the UK.

Earlier this month, Mr Cridland claimed greater reform is required in the public sector with help from private enterprises.
