Better prosthetics for amputees

  • Posted

Another big step has been taken towards better prosthetic limbs for those who have suffered amputation.

Devices implanted directly into nerves that transmit signals wirelessly to prosthetic limbs are under development. Successful animal trials have been carried out and the next step is human trials.

In addition, a new prosthetic skin is being developed which will wrap around the limbs and enable amputees to feel objects for the first time since their limb loss. This is a huge advancement and may lead to a much reduced impact on the amputees life.

Although the technology has a long way to go, it is an exciting step towards more advanced prosthetics for patients who have lost limbs as a result of illness or injury.
