Bowel Cancer Awareness Month: Know the Signs and Why Early Diagnosis Matters

  • Posted

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. Learn the signs of bowel cancer, the importance of early diagnosis, and where to get support. #PassItOn

Every year in April, Bowel Cancer Awareness Month helps to shine a light on one of the most common types of cancer in the UK. It’s a vital opportunity to raise awareness of bowel cancer symptoms, encourage early diagnosis, and support those affected by the disease.

What is Bowel Cancer?

Bowel cancer — sometimes called colorectal or colon cancer — occurs when cells in the bowel grow uncontrollably. It’s the fourth most common cancer in the UK and the second biggest cancer killer. One in 17 men and one in 20 women will be diagnosed with bowel cancer during their lifetime.

However, with early detection and treatment, bowel cancer is often very treatable.

Signs and Symptoms of Bowel Cancer

Spotting the early warning signs of bowel cancer can save lives. A full list of symptoms can be found on the NHS website, but key symptoms to be aware of include:

  • Persistent changes in bowel habits (such as diarrhoea or constipation)
  • Blood in your poo or bleeding from the back passage
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Ongoing pain or discomfort in the abdomen
  • Feeling tired for no obvious reason.

It’s important to remember that these symptoms don’t always mean bowel cancer, but it’s essential to speak to your GP if you notice anything unusual.

The Importance of Early Diagnosis

Early diagnosis of bowel cancer can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment. In fact, when diagnosed at the earliest stage, more than nine in 10 people will survive bowel cancer for five years or more.

Unfortunately, there are cases where bowel cancer is not diagnosed as early as it could be. Sometimes symptoms are mistaken for other conditions, or there may be delays in referrals, testing, or treatment.

While the majority of people receive excellent care, a delay in diagnosis can have life-changing consequences.

Take Action — Don’t Wait with Worry

The key message this April is simple: early action saves lives. Know the signs. Speak to your doctor. And if you feel your concerns haven’t been taken seriously, don’t be afraid to seek a second opinion.

For further information, advice, and support about bowel cancer, you can visit Bowel Cancer UK — the UK’s leading bowel cancer charity. They offer a wide range of resources to help people better understand the symptoms and importance of early diagnosis.

Raising Awareness

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month is not only about raising awareness of symptoms — it’s also about encouraging people to trust their instincts and seek medical advice if something doesn’t feel right.

If you’ve experienced a delay in your diagnosis or treatment of bowel cancer, you may have questions about the care you received. In some situations, delays in diagnosing cancer can lead to more extensive treatment, a reduced chance of recovery, or sadly, worse outcomes.
