Baby Loss Awareness Week (#BLAW2023)

  • Posted

9 to 15 October 2023 is Baby Loss Awareness Week, now in its 21st year.

This week has been set aside to provide the opportunity for everyone affected by baby loss to come together to remember babies who have passed away, supported by a number of bereavement charities. This week raises the profile of pregnancy and baby loss, providing support for those going through the experience and providing information for those around them, enabling them to offer empathy and care. This year is particularly poignant given the maternity investigations coming out of East Kent, Nottingham and Leicester.

Sands, the leading stillbirth and neonatal death charity in the UK, and Tommy’s, the leading pregnancy charity funding research, both provide resources to support families experiencing baby loss. Information is provided not only by clinicians to help families understand the processes that follow after a baby has died, but support is also offered by peers and families who have experienced the same tragedy in the form of local support groups which hold in-person meetings through to the specialist online community or closed Facebook Groups made up of people who have experienced baby loss.

The main focus of Baby Loss Awareness Week is the Wave of Light, where you are encouraged to light a candle at 7pm (local time) on 15 October 2023 in member of all babies’ lives gone too soon. The Wave of Light is a globally recognised event, and you are encouraged to share photos on social media to participate in a virtual Wave of Light under #WaveOfLight.

Ashtons Ali Masterson will be taking part in the #RibbonRun to raise money for Sands to support families who have experienced the tragedy of stillbirth and neonatal death. If you would like to support her, you can donate here: Sands Ribbon Run.
