When bereaved clients need more than just legal support
Losing a loved one unexpectedly due to an accident or incident that was someone else’s fault can be overwhelming, both emotionally and financially. During such a difficult time, it can be hard to know where to turn. If Ashtons Legal is supporting your case, please know that you are not facing this alone.
When our Client Support and Rehabilitation Service carries out an initial assessment, we take the time to understand the needs of everyone in the household, including partners and children, so that the right support can be put in place for the whole family.
Supporting families every step of the way
Our Client Support and Rehabilitation Service is here to care for and support families following a bereavement, helping to ease some of the immediate pressures that can arise after a death. We understand that there is often a period of uncertainty before any financial support becomes available from the responsible party, and we aim to help families manage during this time wherever possible.
Emotional support
Both adults and children can find it difficult to adjust after losing someone close. Where families feel it would be helpful, our Client Support and Rehabilitation Service can arrange free, one-to-one support with a qualified grief counsellor through trusted charities. These sessions are usually held by phone or video call, and clients typically attend between one and six sessions, depending on their needs.
We also recognise that counselling may not feel right for everyone. In these situations, our Client Support and Rehabilitation Service can gently guide families towards other forms of support, such as helplines or bereavement support groups, offering options that feel comfortable and appropriate for each individual.
Guidance on bereavement leave and pay
Our Client Support and Rehabilitation Service can also offer support on employment and statutory rights following a bereavement. This may include guidance on leave or pay entitlements, either under an employment contract, a company handbook, or statutory provisions.
For parents who have lost a child, this may include information about eligibility for statutory parental bereavement leave and pay.
Financial support and benefit checks
In some cases, families may receive financial support through insurance policies, such as life insurance, which can help relieve some financial strain. However, we understand that this is not always available.
Where needed, our Client Support and Rehabilitation Service can carry out a benefit check to explore what additional support may be available. This involves carefully reviewing the household’s income, outgoings, and circumstances to identify any benefits that could be claimed. Support may include help accessing:
- Universal Credit, to assist with income and housing costs
- Pension Credit, for those who have reached state retirement age
- Support for Mortgage Interest loans, where mortgage payments have become difficult
- Bereavement Support Payment, where a spouse or partner has died
- Funeral Expenses Payment, for those on certain benefits who need help with funeral costs.
