Workers facing redundancy ‘should seek legal advice’
Posted 02/06/2011
Employees who are facing the prospect of redundancy should seek out legal advice in order to be fully aware of their rights.
This is according to Phil Flaxton, chief executive officer of Work Wise UK, who said that it is important to be as prepared as possible before discussing severance packages with line managers or human resources departments.
He explained that while this may seem like common sense, a lot of people become so concerned about the consequences of losing their income they do not focus on their rights.
“They might go into a meeting unprepared and not be fully briefed or aware of what their entitlements are,” Mr Flaxton added.
People may find there is a lot of information available to help those who feel they have been dealt with unfairly and want to consider going to an industrial tribunal, the expert added.
Recently, the government announced new employment law changes that could make it easier for firms to implement collective redundancy arrangements.
