A pushchair manufacturer accused of causing injuries to scores of children has agreed to settle compensation claims with their families.

More than 40 children in the UK aged between one and eight sustained injuries, including severed fingers in the umbrella hinges of their Maclaren buggies, with some needing surgery and amputations.

However, despite the firm in the US recalling a million pushchairs, it denied there was a problem in Britain.

Following increasing pressure from mothers’ groups, Maclaren has agreed to pay personal injury compensation of between £2,500 and £10,000 to the affected children, although it does not admit liability.

“We are committed to fully recompense any child who’s been genuinely injured by finger entrapment in one of our products. We take the safety of children very seriously,” a spokesperson for the company commented.

According to its official website, all Maclaren products feature a seal of certification from the Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association to state that they have been built to all relevant British and US standards.
