Commercial property ‘needs to become more sustainable’

People buying commercial property should consider the sustainability of the building and think about investing in a green property.

This is the advice of Paul Edwards, head of sustainability at Hammerson, who said there is currently not enough recognition for the value that eco-friendly measures can bring.

“You will start to see tenants move away from buildings that don’t have any green value to them at all because it is part of their corporate agendas,” he explained.

The expert pointed out that companies will increasingly want to be associated with sustainability in the future as the public calls for more environmental accountability, so it may be better to buy an eco-friendly building now.

The Carbon Trust recently said that Britain’s commercial, industrial and public buildings need to have an energy efficiency rating of C by 2020 and A by 2050 in order to meet carbon reduction targets, Click Green reported.
