When an Injury Puts Your Home at Risk
Recovering from a serious injury or accident can be life-changing. Alongside the physical and emotional impact, many people suddenly face financial pressures that they were never expecting.
At Ashtons Legal, we understand that recovery is about much more than a legal claim. Our clients often need practical support, guidance and reassurance as they adjust to their new circumstances and plan for the future.
The Client Support & Rehabilitation Service (CSRS) is a unique in-house service within our Injury Services Group. Working alongside our legal teams, CSRS helps clients navigate the challenges that can arise following an injury, connecting them with services, support and resources available within their local community.
When Financial Difficulties Arise
There can often be a significant gap between an accident occurring and compensation being received. During this time, some clients experience financial hardship, particularly if they are unable to work or their income has reduced.
As a result, people may struggle to:
- Keep up with mortgage payments
- Pay their rent
- Meet household bills and living expenses
- Avoid the risk of eviction or homelessness
When a client is referred to CSRS, we carry out a detailed assessment to identify any concerns affecting their wellbeing, including financial difficulties. Once we understand the challenges they are facing, we work with them step by step to access all available support and entitlements wherever possible.
Helping Clients Access Financial Support
A key part of our assessment is a benefit check to ensure clients are receiving all the financial assistance they may be entitled to.
Support available for housing costs may include:
- Universal Credit Housing Element for working-age individuals who need help paying rent
- Housing Benefit for people of state pension age who need help with rental costs
- Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI), a government loan that can help with mortgage interest payments
- Crisis and Resilience Fund Housing Payments, provided by local authorities for those experiencing exceptional financial hardship
- Rent Deposit Schemes, which can help clients secure alternative rented accommodation
Our team has extensive experience helping clients understand and access these forms of support. We can assist with applications, paperwork and ongoing communication with relevant organisations.
For homeowners, there may also be alternatives to benefits. In some circumstances, it is possible to arrange a temporary mortgage payment break with a lender, providing valuable breathing space while longer-term plans are put in place.
Support When Housing Is at Risk
If a client is facing eviction, has been told they may lose their home, or has already become homeless, CSRS can provide practical guidance and support throughout the process.
We can help clients with:
- Advice on homelessness and the risk of homelessness
- Finding suitable private rented accommodation
- Registering for social housing
- Completing applications and supporting paperwork
- Understanding their rights and available options
Where specialist legal advice is required, such as in possession proceedings, we can also help clients access the appropriate legal support at the right time, whether through specialist solicitors or free charitable and community-based legal services.
A Holistic Approach to Recovery
The reality is that following a serious injury, concerns about housing and financial security can become just as overwhelming as the injury itself. Every client’s circumstances are different, which is why CSRS provides tailored support based on individual needs.
At Ashtons Legal, we are committed to offering more than legal representation alone. Our CSRS team works closely with our lawyers to ensure that clients and their families feel supported throughout their recovery journey, helping them overcome challenges and access the resources they need to move forward with confidence.
Whatever the situation, CSRS is here to help in any way we can.
