Client Support and Rehabilitation Service: When clients need more than just legal support

At Ashtons Legal, we understand that facing a mesothelioma diagnosis following exposure to asbestos in the workplace can be overwhelming. This is why our Client Support and Rehabilitation Service (CSRS) is here to support clients and their families.

Mesothelioma is a serious form of cancer that develops in the protective lining around the lungs or abdomen. While this diagnosis brings challenges, clients don’t have to face them without help.

Supporting clients through their journey

Whilst our lawyers work hard to obtain compensation for negligent exposure, Ashtons Legal also provides other services to offer comfort and support during this difficult time.

Benefits

When a client is diagnosed with mesothelioma following exposure to asbestos during their working life, we provide guidance through the benefits system while our lawyers work on the compensation claim. CSRS can support clients in applying to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for the welfare and disability benefits to which they are entitled.

This can include the following:

• assistance with Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit applications
• support accessing a lump sum payment under the Pneumoconiosis Etc. (Workers’ Compensation) Act 1979 or 2008 Diffuse Mesothelioma Scheme
• the relevant attendance allowance.

Care and support

For those clients who are very unwell, CSRS offers support in accessing services in the community which a client and their families may need.

This can involve the following services:

• connect clients with specialist nurses for medical support
• help arrange home adaptations to make daily life easier
• assist with care packages tailored to clients’ needs
• support clients in choosing where they feel most comfortable receiving care.

Supporting clients in the community

Anglia Asbestos Disease Support Group

With our clients’ needs in mind and with our connection to the region, Ashtons Legal sponsors the Anglia Asbestos Disease Support Group (AADSG), which was established in 2016 for individuals in East Anglia suffering the effects of exposure to asbestos, including conditions such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer, asbestosis, diffuse pleural thickening, and pleural plaques.

The group meets once a month on the outskirts of Norwich in Norfolk. The meetings are free to attend and open to all patients, carers, family members and friends who may need support following a diagnosis.
