£100,000 settlement obtained for man injured in workplace accident

Graham Heywood, a personal injury specialist at Ashtons Legal, has successfully settled the injury claim of Mr P, who was injured when he put his foot into an open inspection manhole on a building site.

Mr P, who lives and works in Essex, suffered damage to his spine during the incident and worsened a pre-existing injury. He required surgery to relieve pressure on his spinal cord. He also suffered some psychological symptoms and a minor head injury, which has permanently affected his vision. Although he has been able to return to work, his injuries have left him disadvantaged in the labour market. His quality of life generally has been affected as he has been unable to return to riding his motorcycle for pleasure or to rambling in the countryside.

Graham comments: “Although those responsible for leaving the manhole cover open admitted liability for this, they refused to accept the seriousness of Mr P’s injuries and the effect that they had had on Mr P’s life, and so fought the claim.
