East Anglian mesothelioma sufferer’s claim settled for £300,000
Asbestos-related disease claim specialist solicitor Sylvia Phillips has settled the claim of a widow whose husband died following a diagnosis of mesothelioma.
Mr H was in his late 50s when he was diagnosed, and sadly, his illness progressed rapidly. Mr H had been exposed to asbestos during his working life, and the team at Ashtons Legal was able to trace those responsible for allowing that exposure to take place.
Sylvia comments: “This was a slightly unusual claim in that Mr H was already receiving state benefits in relation to a previous injury at the time of his diagnosis. We were required to prove that all the paperwork in relation to that claim had been completed correctly. The mesothelioma claim settled less than a week before the date of the final hearing, with the defendant insurers effectively holding out until the last minute before settling for a realistic sum rather than going through with a costly trial.
“Unfortunately, there are still well over 2000 new cases of mesothelioma diagnosed in the UK each year. Although it is hoped that rates may slowly reduce over the next decade, we are currently seeing the damage done to those who worked in environments where asbestos was present in large quantities back in the 1960s and 1970s”.
