Ashtons attend SCIL Conference 2026

  • Posted

Earlier this month, we had the privilege of attending the SCIL Conference 2026 with Blume stepping up as the head sponsor. Our own Sharon Allison, Chair of the SCIL Executive Committee and Partner here at Ashtons, led proceedings for the day, while Natalie Cosgrove, also a Partner, worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep everything running like clockwork.

For those unfamiliar with SCIL (Society of Clinical Injury Lawyers), it is a network representing over 80 specialist-accredited medical negligence firms across the country. This year’s conference drew an impressive crowd of 200 delegates and 42 exhibitors, all there to share knowledge, debate ideas, and strengthen connections within the field.

The talks that got us thinking

Alex Kenny, CEO of Blume, kicked things off with something we don’t always talk about enough: how intimidating the legal process can feel for potential clients. He challenged us to think about reducing that early worry and confusion, because let’s face it, nobody wants to feel lost when they’re already dealing with a medical negligence situation. It’s a reminder that our job isn’t just about the law, it’s about people.

Kevin Latham from Kings Chambers gave us a much-needed update on costs (always a hot topic), and Richard Baker KC from 7BR delivered a comprehensive legal update that had everyone scribbling notes.

But the real crowd-pleaser? Dr Idz, the headline speaker, who spoke about social media “influencers” spreading medical misinformation. His talk on debunking myths and distinguishing between science and snake oil was both entertaining and genuinely useful, especially in an age when everyone’s suddenly an online expert.

The expert instruction debate

The afternoon panel discussion, chaired by Richard Baker KC, brought together Chris Lavy, Tracy Fields, and Dr Jane Duff to tackle a crucial question: how we instruct medical experts. The conversation centred on writing clear, concise instructions from the outset. Getting the right expert involved at the right time makes all the difference in a case.

What struck us most was the discussion about experts changing their minds during a claim. Rather than seeing this as problematic, the panel highlighted how it’s about intellectual honesty, not stubbornness.

Why conferences like this matter

Events like the SCIL Conference aren’t just about ticking CPD boxes or collecting business cards. They’re where we challenge our assumptions, learn from each other’s experiences, and remember why we chose to specialise in medical negligence law in the first place.

The energy in the room throughout the day was palpable. Conversations continued long after the formal sessions ended, with delegates and exhibitors alike sharing war stories, debating approaches, and forging new professional relationships.

We’re already looking forward to next year’s conference. If you’re working in medical negligence law and haven’t attended a SCIL event yet, you’re missing out on something special.
