Requests for Caesareans turned down

A large proportion of women are being denied the right to opt for a caesarean birth, despite NICE guidance indicating they should be given the choice.

Statistics have shown that up to 75% of maternity units are rejecting requests for elective caesareans. Only 26% of the surveyed 146 NHS trusts are complying with the NICE guidelines.

A caesarean is the method of delivering a baby via incision in the mother’s womb and abdomen. They often occur in emergency circumstances but can also be planned or at the mother’s request, with more than 25% of births in England now being via emergency or elective C-section.

Despite evidence to the contrary, the government is clear that women should be given the option to choose their method of labour. Where an obstetrician is unwilling to agree to an expectant mother’s request, she should be referred to another practitioner who will. Some have suggested that concerns over the costs of caesareans may be the reason for such requests being denied, whilst others have indicated that sometimes there can be a lack of understanding as to the future mother’s mental health and well-being.

The data out yesterday indicates that of the 146 Trusts who shared details of their policies, 15% would refuse a mother’s request for a caesarean section outright.

It is essential that pregnant women’s views on the possibility of caesarean are ascertained. This will ensure they can make an informed decision, alongside advice from their medical practitioners about the most appropriate course of treatment for them and, ultimately, their baby.
